Girl Bonnie here – your resident DIY-er. See that rectangular object I’m holding? It’s a “cookbook”. I know there are young-uns out there scratching your heads, wondering what a cookbook is.
Well, in my day, there was no internet. It’s true. We had to rely on books full of recipes to figure out how to cook things. And, while I confess I’ve dipped my typing fingers into the world wide web to figure out what to do with zucchini, I still love to flip through my many cookbooks. I have a few friends who have had their cookbooks made by traditional publishing standards, and they are amazing! To see your own recipes in print, and actual people are holding them and making these amazing dishes… what a thrill it must be!
My absolute favorite is “The Greens Cook Book” by Debroah Madison. Nearly every recipe I’ve tried has become a success. It’s a vegetarian cookbook, but even you carnivores out there will enjoy recipes such as Cheese & Nut Loaf, Eggplant Gratin With Saffron Custard, and Curried Vegetable Stew.
BTW, Greens is a fabulous vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco. Not only is the food delicious, but the view is spectacular.
I may lose street cred for not plugging a classic cookbook, but “Eggs on Top” by Andrea Slonecker has recently become my favorite. Every recipe includes my favorite food to eat- EGGS! I can eat eggs with every meal, seven days a week. I love them any temperature too, just depends on what kind of a mood I’m in that day.
It won my heart by clearly explaining how to poach an egg, one thing I could never figure out how to do at home. The sage-brown butter eggs is one of those “how have I never thought of that?” recipes and I could eat it all the time. It has fantastic recipes that incorporate eggs into chilaquiles and bourguignon. The eggs in purgatory dish is also great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This book is a great gift for the chicken coupe owner in your life!
Although I am not a vegan, or even a vegetarian, my favorite cookbook is the vegan “Thug Kitchen” by Thug Kitchen. I first found them years ago via their blog, was drawn in by the foul mouthed writing (I have a famously bad mouth), and was sold upon trying their healthy their healthy meals. This cookbook was probably the only one I’ve ever anticipated the release of and considered pre-ordering. With the tagline “Eat Like You Give a F*ck” it features great meal and snack options that are vegan and it’s genuinely fun to read. Mysterious ingredients such as tempeh and tofu are broken down in a way that they become child’s play to prepare. I learned about new (to me) things like Chinese five spice, Tamari, and nutritional yeast. I don’t eat near enough vegetables so I often make the recipes as is, but you can easily add meat to most of the recipes. If you haven’t yet, check out their blog and test-drive a few recipes!
